Where, Not When, Will You Retire?

Tuesday October 14, 2008

Growing up in the northeast United States, it seemed to me that everyone moved to Florida once they retired. In recent years, Arizona, Texas, and Nevada have also become popular retirement destinations. Is it the weather, the golfing, or the availability of good health care? Or, perhaps, does it have more to do with the tax climate or low crime rates? Do people even look at more than the weather when they choose a place to spend their golden years?

If you’re contemplating leaving your current hometown for another state upon or during retirement, make sure that you consider more than the temperature alone. Evaluate retirement destinations on a number of metrics. Better yet, make sure you test-drive the location by spending a good amount of time there before committing to ownership.

I’m wondering where to retire. I suffer (believe me, I SUFFER!) from migraines, which I think are brought on by the various fronts that move through the southeast. I am wondering if the desert southwest is the place to go. Anyone have any thoughts?
