Best Places to Grow Old - According to Forbes Magazine

From Michael Rubin, About.com Guide   June 9, 2009

Forbes Magazine just released its 2009 "Best Places to Grow Old List." Placing special emphasis on "the percentage of those aged 65 and over, the median income of those 65 and over, and the number of hospitals, clinics and elder care facilities per 10,000 people in each county," some potentially surprising locations made the list. Here are the top 10 counties, according to Forbes:
  • Montgomery County, Pennsylvania
  • Nassau County, New York
  • Pima County, Arizona
  • Palm Beach County, Florida
  • Honolulu County, Hawaii
  • Brevard County, Florida
  • Montgomery County, Maryland
  • Ocean County, New Jersey
  • Westchester County, New York
  • Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
These seem like great places to remain if you currently live there. But I wonder how many people could truly afford to move to such high-priced locales upon retirement? For that matter, how many retireees could afford to stay?

What do you think about this list?

Boy, your list of places to retire sure missed the boat.

There really is a K-A-L-A-M-A-Z-O-0.

It’s in a state called Michigan.

This is a place to enjoy retirement. Fabulous spring, summer, winter and fall.
Loads of cultural activities, theatre, professional and amateur. Recreation year round. Expensive??? Hardly! Beautiful vistas! Friendly people! Three beautiful seasons: Spring, Summer and Fall. And one
suprising winter: Dashing in the snow…
True, an occasional blizzard, but a great time to stay indoors and reminscene about how great the past year has been. Come see us.
We can’t help ourselves by being friendly and welcoming. You’ll love it. Don’t take my word for it. Come and see it.

I spent about 10 years in Kalamazoo, and by the way he recommends it, I think Jim must work for Kalamazoo’s Chamber of Commerce! Kalamazoo has its pros and cons. I was NOT fond of its winters. Too long and too much snow. Being near the east shore of Lake Michigan, Kalamazoo suffers the lake effect, which intensifies the precipitation (both rain and snow) compared to cities west of the lake (Chicago, etc) which is where I live now. Culturally I agree that Kalamazoo has good things to offer, thanks to Western Michigan University’s offerings. I also like that there’s not too much traffic (compared to the Chicago area!). I could talk a lot more, but I’ll just say that overall, I would rate Kalamazoo a B-.
