Definition: An account which can earn dividends, interest, and capital gains not subject to annual income tax. Only when distributions (withdrawals) are taken from the account, typically during retirement, are taxes due. Regular IRAs and 401(k)s are widely available examples of accounts providing for tax-deferred growth.
