Almost everyone looks forward to the day they can retire from the day to day grind of a full time job. Once this day arrives though it could be quite a task to enjoy it to the fullest. Our retirement dreams might not become a reality due to issues that are out of our control. Being happily retired is really just a state of mind. Whether or not a person is happy in retirement depends on their expectations and their preparations prior to the big day.
These tips are probably things you've heard time and again but I feel they deserve mentioning again just to refresh your memory.
Here's How:
Start planning early
The sooner you start to plan for your retirement, the better. If your goals include travel or living the life of luxury, you want to be sure your have the means to pull it off. Have a plan and a what-if plan. A what-if plan is just a back up plan to help prepare you for some of life's cruel little tricks.
Consider what you want to do
What do you really want to do? Happiness usually happens when a person is doing something they enjoy. Make a list of all the things you hope to do during this period of your life and then make plans to get as many as possible checked off.
Include your spouse or partner in your plans
If your spouse or partner is happy, chances are you will be too. An unhappy spouse or partner can really darken even the best day so be sure to discuss your plans and try to come to some sort of agreement.
Think about your health
Do everything you can to stay as healthy as possible. Granted, you don't have much control over some health issues but you can watch your diet and habits, exercise, and get regular check-ups. A few preventative measures can pay off.
Keep active
Once you retire, keeping active will keep you young. Do some sort of activity each day that you enjoy. This can be walking, talking with friends, or shopping.
Don't feel sorry for yourself
If you decide to just sit around and feel sorry for yourself, you will eventually become quite miserable. You are responsible for your happiness so get up and get happy. Go out of your way to meet new people, volunteer, start a hobby, or even get a job to help make your life happier.
